Basketball FAQs:
What can we expect regarding practice and game schedules in Basketball?
- Each coach picks the day, time, and location of their team's practice.
- Practices and games take place at several gyms in the West Knoxville/Bearden area.
- There is 1 practice per week.
- The youngest age groups get the earliest times in order to get home earlier. As the age groups go up, the later time slots are utilized.
How do you choose which age group my child is in?
A child’s “basketball” age is the age he/she was on September 1st. Players can "Play up" at their parents' discretion. Leagues are intentionally organized based on age or school grades to ensure safety.
Can my child play “up or down” in a division?
A child cannot “play down.” If a child chooses to “play up” in a division, they will need to register for the division they would normally be assigned to then contact KYS so they can be moved to appropriate league.
Can my daughter play basketball?
Yes, we welcome girls. Girls have their own Leagues in 6U, 8U, & 10U. Girls in Pre-K play in our Co-Ed League.
Are there concessions at games?
No. Most gyms have water fountains present for water. Food/snacks/drinks are not permitted in the gyms.
What size jersey should we order?
Our NBA jerseys are a high-quality performance fabric (Dri-fit) which does not shrink.
You can order the player’s true size (i.e., a T-shirt that they like to wear, and which fits well).
Our size codes are:
- YS = Youth Small
- YM = Youth Medium
- YL = Youth Large
- YXL= Youth Extra Large
- AS= Adult Small
- AM= Adult Medium
- AL = Adult Large
When do we get our jerseys?
- Players will receive their jersey FROM THEIR COACH before their first game.
- All coaches will have the opportunity to pick up their jerseys the day before the first Saturday of games at KYS (5908 Lyons View Pike). We highly recommend this.
- Otherwise, all jerseys will be delivered to game sites the first Saturday of games and coaches will need to receive them from the gym supervisor.
- All numbers will be pre-assigned by the league for sizing purposes.
- A jersey will not be issued to a player who has not paid or made arrangements with the Executive Director.
What kind of shoes and shorts should the player wear?
- Any good pair of “sneakers” will do. Shoes that are meant for changing directions are ideal, such as "Basketball," "Court," "Cross-Training," or "Tennis" shoes. Shoes should be laced up and snug.
- All players should wear appropriate athletic shorts. Players should be dressed in a manner that respects the game of basketball. NBA shorts will be provided to teams with sponsors.
